Halo 3 Tournament
The Salina Public Library is sponsoring a two-day Halo 3 Tournament on Memorial Day Weekend. The tournament will begin at noon on May 24 and 25 in the library’s Community Learning Center, 308 W. Elm, because the library is closed on Sunday.
The tournament will consist of 16 4-person teams playing in a double-elimination format. They will play at MLG settings. Players can provide their Xbox live gamertag for ranking using bungie.net, but this is not required. Prizes will be awarded.
The tournament is open to players in sixth grade through college. They can register online. Teams must sign in and be present at noon the day of the tournament or a team from the waiting list will be given that spot. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
NewspaperArchive is new service
The Salina Public Library has added another online database that will be a great primary source of research for history students and genealogy researchers. NewspaperArchive.com is the world’s largest online newspaper archive, with 2,790 titles from 733 cities. It includes 79.2 million pages spanning 240 years and is adding a page every second or about 2.5 million pages a month. Most newspapers are available only with a limited number of years.
Judy Lilly, Kansas historian at the library, says NewspaperArchive features many smaller newspapers that are not available in other online sources. Kansas newspapers include the Salina Journal from 1951 to 1977 along with the Atchison Globe, Emporia Gazette, Great Bend Tribune, Lawrence Journal World and Leavenworth Times.
Besides the United States, newspapers are available from Algeria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, South Africa, Tunisia and the United Kingdom.
The archive is searchable by key words and dates. The archive can be used at any computer in the library, but it not available for use outside the library.
